Handling anxieties during the school year

Handling anxieties during the school year

The school year is full of challenges and obstacles and anxiety is a common problem for most students. School can be overwhelming due to a lot of reasons- excessive academic pressure, non-friendly teachers, school bullies, tight schedules, lack of friends or belongingness, etc.

Some of the ways to handle your anxiety during the school year are -

1. Create a plan to manage your academics
One of the major causes of school anxiety is last-minute exam preparations. Do not keep your syllabus pending throughout the year. Create a fixed study plan and fill your schedule accordingly. The better prepared you are for your exams, the less anxious you will feel.

2. Join some extracurricular activities beyond academics
School can be a pretty daunting place if all you have to do is study all day. Engage in extracurricular activities like games, art, and craft, music, dancing, etc. to motivate yourself to go to school every day. This strategy will not just keep your anxieties at bay but even excite you for your school.

3. Interact more with your classmates and teachers
Your social anxiety will get worse if you keep avoiding your classmates or teachers. Get out of your shell and communicate with the people around you. Try to make friends, joke around, and have healthy, fun conversations. Put yourself out there every day and try your best to interact with everyone.

4. Find a way to deal with your bullies rather than escaping
If every morning you wake up, you are scared of the thought of going to school because of the bullies, take action. Escaping your dear will simply elevate it. Rather confront your bullies. If you don't have enough confidence to do it, reach out to your teachers or parents or any anti-ragging community in your school.

5. Take professional help
Professional help should not be seen as one of the last resorts to handle your school anxiety. Professional help is necessary if nothing else seems to be working. In fact, in some situations, the anxiety might get so bad that you might not even have it in you to adopt the above strategies. In that case, therapy is the best possible solution.

Dealing with school anxiety is one of the most difficult phases in a student's life. If you do not take active measures to control it, it might get a hold of you and ruin your entire school life which is a major part of your entire life. So you must take steps to control your anxiety.
